Human AI teaming Knowledge and Understanding for aviation safety

HAIKU is redefining the role of Artificial Intelligence in aviation by developing human-centric Intelligent Assistants designed to support pilots and aviation professionals. These AI-driven assistants will adapt, learn from human users, and continuously evolve to enhance safety, efficiency, and decision-making. The project goal is to create AI systems that not only assist but also understand human values, needs, and limitations. To achieve this, research focuses on key areas such as safety, security, and ethics, ensuring AI integration is both effective and trustworthy. Additionally, how AI will shape the future aviation workforce is explored.

To bring this vision to life, HAIKU will develop guidelines and methods for designing safe, effective, and trustworthy AI assistants using Human Factors Design principles. This entails real-world experiments being conducted in aviation scenarios -both normal and emergency ones- to test the AI’s role, decision-making, and team performance. Another key aspect of the project work is supporting aviation stakeholders and regulatory authorities in integrating AI early, ensuring it enhances safety and system validation. Moreover, pilots, industry leaders, policymakers and the general public are actively engaged to ensure AI in aviation is socially acceptable and aligned with aviation’s strong safety culture.

HAIKU is pioneering the next generation of AI-powered aviation tools, ensuring that technology works for pilots, not against them. As we shape the future of flight with intelligent, human-centric AI solutions, we invite you to stay connected and be part of this exciting journey towards safer and smarter aviation.
